London Girl Geek Dinners – geeky chicks hang out

January 12th, 2009

As you may have noticed, I added a new affiliation link for London Girl Geek Dinners. A quick intro then, I initially got involved with this community from an ex work colleague of mine Sarah Blow. Seeing as she knew I had the inner geek in me, she persuaded me to check out one of her events. As I arrived, the atmosphere was warm and felt quite cosy… and free. It is hard to describe sometimes how much I have to surpress some of my tech personality in the past. You see, showing intelligence and knowledge in a field where it is strictly male dominated can sometimes give the impression you are overbearing, and the male pride goes on the defensive. Thankfully my current workplace is quite liberal in that respect, but the odd ego or two is still prevalent. With organisations such as the London Girl Geek Dinners, changes are afoot in fields such as I.T, science, mathematics, to show that we can excel in these fields as well as the guys can.

What started out as a small project exploded into a cataclysm of ideas and free thinking from women all over the world, there are more girl geeks than you think. It still astonishes me how one idea from one person can blossom into something that grew in popularity at a rate of knots. There are also events where you can bring a guy a long, as long as he is invited by a girl. This isn’t the old cliché of “girl power” but more along the lines of encouraging women to explore different sectors of work and to not be put off by the male dominance factor.

As the founder of LGGD, Sarah Blow has appeared on radio shows and more recently featured in The Guardian and the BBC. I am looking forward to the next event, oh and yes I do get along with my male work colleagues very well!
