T-Mobile’s HTC G1
I love HTC products, since I have 2 devices from their lineup. But this one however, hmmm. To me it looks ugly, in fact when I showed it to my American friend she pointed out that it looks awfully familiar to the T-Mobile Sidekick range. Since our American cousins have completely different phone lineups to the UK/Europe, I took a gander on their US site. The similarities are striking I have to admit. I’m not one for simply going for aesthetics with my purchases, but I do like innovation in style and the G1 is lacking.
Before I go on any further, this is Google’s first step into the mobile phone arena with their Android OS. I have a feeling that HTC had limited say in what the phone looked like, with T-Mobile at the helm. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on functionality since it is not out here across the pond yet. It would be very difficult for another phone to turn up, to tear me away from my HTC Touch HD. But you never know.
This reminds me of what happened to Motorola. When they first released the Razer, their design was revolutionary and it sold by the bucket load. But they got complacent and well I don’t hear much about them anymore. Competition is fierce and I hope the G2 will look better and that they do not re-use the same designs. I have taken a glimpse of the G2 and it seems to be a touchscreen phone, so it does look promising.
