Brit hacker vs US + dog
I’m not going to write up too much about this as everyone knows the background, but I was reading this with a bit of humour. Firstly, I find it fascinating how one man can gain access to so many key security systems before someone wakes up from their afternoon snooze and go, hey I think someone has breached our network security. Mr McKinnon had gained computer network access to the US Army, US Navy, US Air Force, NASA and the Department of Defence, before finally being caught by tracing back to his email address. A slight slip up there, at least spoof it.
Moreover, what was the purpose of all this? To find out whether UFOs exist, all this bypassing of firewalls, the usage of some insane algorithms, for a dodgy photograph of a circular disc… most likely a Frisbee from the 60s. It would have been easier, surely, to take a weekend drive in your Cadillac to Area 51 with a pair of binoculars. At least you would get some fresh air, sitting in front of the PC all day can be unhealthy although I am stubborn for not taking my own advice.
The amusing thing is, he is now a “suicide risk” if he is extradited to the US to answer for his crimes. What is he going to do, hang himself with an exorbitantly long CAT5 network cable? I cannot see the Americans letting this slide and preventing the extradition can only bode ill will for the alliance between the UK and the US. You do not go gallivanting around the American defence network, opening doors where you shouldn’t, without facing the consequences.
